  • Feature: Big Day Out 2012: ‘Don’t Die In Thi ..
Some observations from Big Day Out veteran DARREN LEVIN as the festival celebrated its 20th year at Flemington Racecourse on Sunday (January 29). Photos by LEAH ROBERTSON . ‘Are you nice and sweaty?’ Attending a festival in 35-degree heat is difficult enough without bands telling you just how hot it is. “Hope you don’t die in this heat,” quipped Stonefield’s singer Amy Findlay at midday when the sun was at the height of its powers. “Are you nice and sweaty?” quizzed The Vaccines’ Justin Young. Kimbra Johnson asked us if we were “hot and sticky”, before Soundgarden’s Chris ...

  • PropertyOfZack Review : : States
For those who take to Mindy White’s voice like a hipster to Brooklyn or flock to the musicality of Copeland’s discography, States’s new full-length, Room to Run, will almost certainly satisfy. The pristine dirtiness of White’s vocal performance adds some grunge to the typical Copeland instrumentation. What’s intriguing about Room to Run , as opposed to States’s previous release, is the dynamics. There’s an ebb and flow. Hookiness and artistry work together simultaneously. For the most part. The album erupts with “Timebomb” which introduces grunginess-turned-beautiful. The fullness of White’s harmonies hits when an ...

  • SFV Acid EP via 100% Silk
Last year I got a few Eric Copeland 7"s sent my way from PPM, but being the good people they are, the package was much bigger than the required size for the mini-vinyl. Included in the shipment was SFV Acid's New West Coast LP. If the SFV Acid record flew under your radar, I highly suggest seeking it out if you are a fan of Dam Funk, lowrider music and beat tapes. The album is all of these things rolled into bedsheet-size joint paper and lit to an even burn. I vowed to not let another ...

  • Richard's TOP 10 SONGS OF 2011
    1.  Clams Casino - All I Need / I'm God from Instrumental Mixtape ( Type ) Even if both these beats technically came out last year beneath Soulja Boy and Lil' B raps respectively, it wasn't until about half way through this year that the full mountainous weight of these instrumentals really hit me. And just out of Imogen Heap samples, I mean shit!  2.  James Ferraro - Earth Minutes from Far Side Virtual ( Hippos In Tanks ) Ferraro's sounds have always been heavily responsive to mainstream of the now and what he does with it is always amazing in terms of quality ...

  • Unsigned Friday: Crooked Words
Who: Crooked Words is the dynamic duo of Glenn Kendzia and Harrison McClain. Glenn wrote and recorded all of their debut album, Among Other Things , and then joined forces with Harrison. A little backwards, but that's how it happened nonetheless. What: Crooked Words is delicately layered piano-based alternative rock with haunting lyrics, rife with incessant over-analyzation. Think Death Cab for Cutie and Copeland , spooning on a soft bed in a haunted house. Where: Glenn lives inside of his head. He wants everyone to come hang out and see what he's thinking, but then won't actually let anyone ...
