  • THE CRIBS – In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull ..
(Liberator) Factoid: Lead singer dated Kate Nash The Cribs seem to occupy a strange place within contemporary British rock. Known for their prevailing interest in idiosyncratic groups such as Beat Happening and Comet Gain, they’re cult heroes in their homeland and seen as somewhat separate to the more mainstream British rock acts that we’re used to seeing wash up on the shores of the antipodes. Perhaps their incorruptible integrity may have been the reason that ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr ...

  • The Cribs - In The Belly of the Brazen Bull ..
If you'll pardon the slightly pompous BA Journalism term, what's the current "narrative" of the Jarman brothers? For their first few albums The Cribs were characterised as eccentric punk rockers whose ace songwriting was hampered by lo-fi production which made their brilliant songs sound like they'd been recorded in/by a tin can (which was sort of true). Then when it came to album four, 2009's Ignore the Ignorant , all eyes were on - "Hey It's Johnny Marr! Out Of The Smiths!" (and Modest Mouse) "What's He Doing In The Cribs?" That album was also ...

  • Tender Trap ensnare listeners with new album ..
Goiles! Who doesn’t love ‘em, eh? Well, Stephin Merritt doesn’t love them (he enjoys boys), and given his famously irritable personality, he might not even like them, but he’ll have to deal with a pretty hefty dose of the twee British songstress variety of lady later this month when Tender Trap open for The Magnetic Fields during a short spree of UK dates. Here’s hoping the girls in Tender Trap don’t turn up the volume too loud and make Mr. Merritt scrunch up his face and stick his fingers in his ears — it’s never ...

  • The 405 Review: London Popfest 2012
London Popfest is not your average music festival. Along with its international counterparts, the Glasgow, Madrid, San Francisco and New York Popfests (and it’s entirely possible I’m missing a few, or more than a few, here), it takes place not in a field but all over the city, with bands scheduled for a single venue each night so there’s no chance of clashes – but there’s always a pub within easy reach if you feel like taking a break. Popfest caters to the indiepop crowd, a friendly bunch decked out in cardigans and button badges, but don ...

  • Cover version of the week: "Love Vigilantes" ..
There are lots of new New Order covers floating around of late, courtesy of a story in a recent edition of the UK music mag Mojo . KCRW's blog highlights their favorite covers here . Comet Gain's version of "Love Vigilantes" is fantastic--it has the energy of the source material but still sounds new. I'm not sure why everyone keeps praising Destroyer's version of "Leave Me Alone" though, as it sounds a lot like the original to me, just not as good. Still, I'll let you be the judge.

by Dusted Magazine Comet Gain David Feck and the cavalcade of folks that have comprised Comet Gain have left an indelible mark on those lucky enough to hear them. Their quintessentially British sound harkens back to the early 1990s, and Feck's ingenious, genuine lyrics continue to astound. In his review of... Read More

Roxanne Clifford (vocals and guitar) and Patrick Doyle (drums and vocals) had already been in Sexy Kids together by the time they met James Hoare (vocals and guitar), of Your Twenties, at a Comet Gain show.
