  • Introducing The Cutler
It's always pretty exciting when one of the artists I post about actually drops by and leaves a comment on the site. Bassnectar was super-stoked that I posted his tune. Bigga Bush and Tim "Love" Lee were both chuffed that someone was still bangin' some of their old classics, etc... but here I have a first for you, as a couple of guys I have massive respect for actually hit me with some (relatively) exclusive, unreleased tunes! Big day, people. Big day... The Cutler are Steve Cobby of Downtempo legends (and Tonegents faves) Fila Brazilia and the mystery man ...

  • Pablo Larrain's 'No' Picked Up For U.S. By S ..
When movies aren’t being watched at the Cannes Film Festival, they’re being purchased, and we’ve got news of a couple that have been picked up for North American distribution. First up is Pablo Larrain’s “No,” which has been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. Larrain’s most notable feature to date was probably his “Saturday Night Fever”-inspired serial killer flick “Tony Manero,” but thanks to having Gael Garcia Bernal in the lead role (and a strong Cannes reception) “No” may be about to eclipse his previous efforts. The film, which has been screening in Director’s ...

  • V/A - Trevor Jackson Presents Metal Dance: I ..
by Logan K. Young At best, a compilation will always be a singles club, a subjective rounding up of solitary songs. At worst, it's just another solipsistic memento mori . This is a congenital issue, of course. No matter how choice the cuts, how thoughtful the sequencing, a compilation will forever be less... Read More

  • Live Review: The Brian Jonestown Massacre + ..
The Forum is packed to the brim, with a myriad of punters making themselves comfortable in every conceivable fashion, upstanding, sprawled on couches, positioned on stairs. It seems like Melbourne’s musical cognoscenti is out in force, with all manner of musos and fans of Brian Jonestown Massacre waiting next to each other in anticipation. The Raveonettes rouse the throng with “Beat City” featuring some uncomfortably loud feedback and a drum machine that drowns out the sound of live drums. The mood is set with the smoke machine in overdrive. Guitarist Sune Rose Wagner ’s between song banter is minimal ...

  • Awesome band returns after lengthy hiatus wi ..
Fantastic news, everyone! Medieval gothic tomb sprites Dead Can Dance are back! The original worldbeat/goth 4AD flava etherealists have returned from their lengthy slumber and they’re bearing spoOoOoky beautiful gifts, in the form of their first album of new material in a sweet 16 years. So, that’s it. All you swoopy-haired Renaissance Festival minstrels armed with cardboard swords, cheesy harmonies, and sad 15th-century imagery can just CAN it. Because Dead Can Dance are the original purveyors of “hey, a Gregorian chant would sound cool with this swirling art rock,” and they can do it a hell of ...

  • Rapture & Verse #11
Damn you writer’s block, stifling any attempt at a memorable introduction to get things under way. Another piece of paper screwed up and headed towards the bin...what’s that though...Grand Slam grunter Serena Williams has released a hip-hop track? And subsequently has shown true rapper heritage by getting annoyed at having it leaked online? You couldn’t make it up, and that, ladies and gentleman, is this month’s introduction written. Keep on with those volleys and chop-shots Serena. Wanna watch a mid 80s hip-hop documentary overseen by an impossibly-named, Dutch Jarvis Cocker-lookalike? Of course you do ...

  • Vale Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn
November 24, 1941 – May 13, 2012 Like any music fan, Rave was saddened to hear about the passing of Booker T & The M.G.’s iconic bassist Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn on May 13. A rock-solid Stax session man, it was his taut pulse that drove omnipresent classics like Green Onions, Sam & Dave’s Hold On, I’m Comin’ and Albert King’s Born Under A Bad Sign, while his interplay with fellow Stax dynamos Steve Cropper and the late Al Jackson Jr became one of pop music’s most distinctive sounds. May ...

  • Music: Music Review: Garbage: Not Your Kind ..
Initially, Garbage ’s calling card was drummer Butch Vig, who produced Nirvana ’s Nevermind , among other grunge-era classics. In spite of that bankable association, the band wisely held grunge at arm’s length. After all, grunge was obsessed with the admittedly slippery ethic of authenticity. Garbage, by grunge’s standards, had none. Here was a group blatantly manufactured by Vig and guitarist Duke Erikson , journeymen who first played together professionally in 1975. The multiplatinum sales of 1995’s Garbage (and to a lesser extent, 1998’s Version 2.0 ) proved that the band’s sharp, dark hooks—plus Shirley Manson ...
