  • Cerberus: Noish & Xedh - rlhaaa to
By Papaya on May 16 2012 The reason I hate writing about so-called “abstract” music also happens to be one of the reasons I love listening to it. It can’t be hastily described in terms of a blanket buzzy genre or reduced to a formulaic hypothetical (“sounds like if X artist and Y artist combined”) — that is, if it’s well made, which rlhaaa to very much happens to be. Described by the label as a “deconstruction of field recordings,” understood in a Derridean sense to mean an album created outside of the false dichotomy between the non-music of ...

  • Into the Trees
As you may have realized, XLR8R generally focuses on music primarily made with circuits, software, or some kind of combination of the two, so coverage of London-via-Chicago folk artist One Little Plane 's sophomore LP, Into the Trees , might come off as strange. But the songwriter, known from birth as Kathryn Bint, enlisted electronic music doyen Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet ) for production duties on the album, spiking our interest in this otherwise un-electronic, folksy collection of songs. Into the Trees is mostly devoid of synths, chopped-up vocal samples, and the like, but change can be refreshing sometimes ...

  • Concentric Circuits
Queensland Conservatorium – Sat May 12 Curated by Lawrence English from experimental label Room40 as part of the Conservatorium’s Crossbows Festival, Concentric Circuits aims to showcase the diversity of live electronic music and art. After spending the afternoon attending the Unseen Sound workshop where I get to make a DIY contact mic, I stumble upon iPad ensemble Concussion playing in the Con Foyer. While the concept is incredibly exciting, the performance in itself is somewhat of a ...

  • Plastikman "Ask Yourself (214 Refix)"
Fortified Audio has a habit of releasing defining releases early in young artists' careers, prior to their assimilation into larger circuits and bigger crowds. With its first release of 2012, however, the imprint has taken a left turn and prepped the Plastic Spokes EP from Seattle veteran 214 . "Ask Yourself (Refix)" is not on the forthcoming record, but makes its case known as a driving electro workout helmed from the cybotronic shards of the Plastikman classic . Bobbing and weaving through slowly enveloping, razor-sharp synths and buoyed by a tense stampede of 808 samples, the tune explodes during its final minute ...

  • VIDEO VACUUM - Explosions In The Sky, Joe Mc ..
Hectic personal life and hectic working life means my social life is taking a battering this week. As in, I don't have one. SO I'm locking myself away to reach deadlines and save cashola, all the while knowing there are at least four great shows on this weekend, three of which are one-offs (Eat Laser Scumbag! Nova Scotia! Keep On Dancins! Concentric Circuits! Erm...The Sips!) ARGH! So I really need encouragement. Here are some videos that are perking up my downward spiral... No surprises that the first cab off the ranks is one of my all-time favourites ...

  • Review: Infinite Void - Infinite Void
Bringing together former and current members of The Diamond Sea, Schifosi, Circuits and Deep Heat, Infinite Void pound out catchy and buzzy punk rock that traces its sound back to the Minneapolis of the mid-’80s and Olympia of the ’90s. But from the driving 'Pay For What's It's Worth' to the dual female vocal harmonies of 'Give Up', the sound of Infinite Void is still definitely Melbourne 2012. It may help that both Jacquie and Alicia play together in another punk outfit Deep Heat, which also features Gus of Boomgates. The difference between the two bands lies ...

  • A LITTLE OF WHAT LEVON LEFT BEHIND
[Note: Starting with this post, audo links are now on the song titles.] Sadly, I note the passing of Levon Helm , Arkansas-born drummer and singer, who was the lone US citizen in a group of expatriate Canadians.known as the Band , whose first two albums, recorded and released in this country in the late 1960s, established them as the definitive American roots rock band, before the term actually existed. In my low-rent opinion, if you know anything at all about New Orleans music, you can’t help but hear the city’s fundamental early rock ‘n’ roll and R&B; influences ...

  • In Like Flint
Never shy of offering top-of-the-range guitar effects, Strymon are launching their latest creation: the Flint Tremolo & Reverb, which is like plugging into a ‘60s Fender amp with a spring tank and cranking up that confusingly-titled ‘vibrato’ knob for starters – and then venturing far beyond. Typically built like a tank, the pedal incorporates carefully recreated circuits that eerily match the vintage algorithms and features not one, but three types of reverb: ‘60s Spring Tank, ‘70s Electron ...

  • Motion City Soundtrack announce new album ..
Everyone's favourite pop-punkers with a sugar rush Motion City Soundtrack are set to release their fifth studio album 'Go' on 11th June via Epitaph. According to the press release, the new record is all about "choices, embracing what you have, love, death and more." Standard Motion City Soundtrack, then! Returning to the label after five years apart, the move sees the band being able to recoil with a creative freedom that once spawned fan favourites - 2003's I Am The Movie and 2003's Commit This To Memory - and consequently has supposedly produced their most mature record to date ...

  • Quintino & Moti – Circuits (Original Mix) ..
Not too shabby of a day for either of the masterminds behind last year’s smash anthem “Epic.” Sandro Silva’s new banger “Core“ just dropped on Bingo Players’ Hysteria imprint today, while Quintino’s new collaboration track with Moti, “Circuits,” was also just released today on Afrojack’s Wall Recordings. Within mere seconds of the start of the [...]
