  • Awesome Tapes: Cassette Doc Forthcoming Via ..
A pair of aspiring filmmakers are currently scrambling to raise $25,000 on Kickstarter to fund Cassette: A Documentary , a chronicle of the “quiet comeback” of the boombox staple. Sure, the term “cassette tape” was recently wiped from the Oxford English Dictionary and those fickle little things are pretty clunky when compared to the Zune or whatever (hey, maybe the resurgence will also bring back the pencil!); but, the pair argue in a short video on their site, that the mix of nostalgia, portability, and accessibility has endeared tapes to a new generation. Zach Taylor, a U.K-based cinematographer and ...

  • Nite Jewel - "One Second of Love"
When L.A. artist Ramona Gonzalez released her first collection of lo-fi lounge music as Nite Jewel in 2008, her eight-track creations made a mark among the avant-pop underground. Her inaugural Good Evening LP generated ample interest in bedroom-disco, with highlights like "Weak for Me" and "What Did He Say?" pegging her aesthetic: 1980s pop filtered through a tin can. Her vibe was charming, but better suited for headphones than a club, and from the beginning her technique suggested she could move beyond the limits of cassette culture. Nite Jewel's sound has gradually developed since then, and following a ...

  • Feature: 2011: Dispatches from the Pop Museu ..
by Jonathan Dean • December 2011 2011 was the year nostalgia swallowed its own tail. Our collective need to gaze toward the past and to exhume our own cultural memories reached a crisis point. Our lust for anachronization and reenactment, for historical invocation, finally caught up with itself. No matter how much we attempted to reinvest the past with meaning, to privilege the lost and marginalized, to plunder and sample the audio ghosts of bygone eras, we bumped up against the irrevocable limitation of time’s arrow: The past is a limited resource, and we seem to have used it up ...

  • Interview: Matthewdavid
by C Monster • November 2011 Beat magician and Leaving Records’ owner Matthewdavid always gets his. It’s tough to accentuate him without repeating myself . But nah, son, Matthewdavid got mad props from featuring Flying Lotus and Serengeti, getting repp’d on Brainfeeder , having an ongoing Dublab -post-intership, and even a Odd Nosdam split: this is his 2011. Last year, he was hot too, like when he ego-death’dd with Sun Araw (live), mixtape’d with Nanny Cantaloupe, and killed Los Angeles with Take a.k.a. Sweatson Klank on 2/10. And his collection on Leaving Records; I can’t ...

  • Tape #7: Octopus
I'm wrestling with an octopus and faring less than well, one peek at my predicament should be enough to tell. • Tape #5: Calypso
I've knocked together another tape for you. This one is called Calypso and is basically a load of songs that have steel drums in them. There are some dangerously good remixes in there which massively drive things up (e.g. Rex the Dogs edits of Triangle Walks just hits the roof). And there are some originals too, Round Table Knight's Calypso and Xinobi's Hawaii stand on their own. Download Tape #5: Calypso image by Earl-Wilkerson compiled by Cassette Culture Tracklist 1. • ♫ Listen: Matthewdavid - "Reunited"
Matthewdavid sets a good example for electronic artists by distributing his music without aggression. This year, Brainfeeder dropped Outmind on LP/CD and the digital Internatinal EP , and the track you’re listening to now is off his recent Sweedish Fish CS42 split with Odd Nosdam, released on Leaving Records (Matthewdavid’s label). You may have hit up last winter's banger Livephreaxxx!!!! when he remixed Sun Araw live at Sun Ark studios. I thought them bumps broke my cassette player; proof: Matthewdavid can absorb Cameron Stallones. Well, "Reunited" is much easier listening, showing off his professional dub-synth collage workout ...

  • Track: Polarsets
by Lomo-Cam Wasn't particularly impressed by the original but this remix of Polarsets Sunshine Eyes by Channel Swimmer hits the spot. Idyllic, summery, poolside. Hopefully have a bit more from Channel Swimmer soon - I think this is the same guy who used to be Organ Morgan and featured on the old Cassette Culture way back when. Glad to be re-visiting.
