  • Graded on a Curve: Treepeople Something Vici ..
Everybody who recognizes the name Doug Martsch knows the man from his long and fruitful tenure as leader of Built to Spill, but that’s not the only notch on his guitar strap. And if asked to cite Martsch’s “other band,” a considerable number of those who know him would likely offer up the name Halo [...]

Dinosaur Jr. 's catalog has been  reissued and celebrated with  full-album tours . But, as previously reported , J Mascis will now look back on his career in a very different way. Mascis has teamed up with Built to Spill bassist Brett Nelson's  Electronic Anthology Project to remake nine Dinosaur Jr. songs as full-blown synth-pop. "Tarpit" from 1987's  You're Living All Over Me is the first taste. The album will be released in a limited-edition run of 500 purple vinyl records, out April 21 for  Record Store Day . A digital, CD, and standard vinyl release will follow. Stream of ...

  • Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies Of The Fut ..
When I first heard Perfect from now On I found it a rambling and rather incoherent work which didn't seem to justify the effort which I was likely to have to expend to get into it. Then I heard You in Reverse and was stunned. Stunned by the guitar work, the lyrics and the way that this could produce hooks which just stuck in my mind long after I had ceased listening to the music. The success of that album ultimately convinced me to buy Ancient Melodies of the Future , Built to Spill 's sixth album and the one ...

  • HT Interview: Plants and Animals
Rarely will a band come around that encapsulates the full spectrum of what we try to do here at Hidden Track. As purveyors of improvisational music, indie rock, Americana and general open-mindedness, there’s a very short list of bands who embrace those same interests in one fell swoop. However, Montreal-based Plants and Animals are one of those rare anomalies. [Photo by Caroline Desilets] Taking their latest standout album, The End of That , as case in point, Plants and Animals take sharp sonic turns from track to track, embraces instrumental experimentation, writes concise and distinctive songs, and pull from endless ...

  • Ears Wide Open: WALK
“Icebreaker,” the debut album by L.A. quartet WALK, is just that: an entreé to the kaleidoscopic songwriting explorations of Tim Jordan and bandmates Daniel Apodaca, Chris Kerrigan and Matt Kelly. It’s a delirious collision of psychedelia and shoegaze and more — the Flaming Lips meet Swervedriver, Dinosaur Jr. meets Built to Spill, to throw around [...]

  • Introducing: Brett Netson
Brett Netson is a name that should be familiar to anyone who grew up during and survived the alternative nation explosion of the ’90s. The Boise, Idaho native has, since 1993, played guitar with the long-running rock dynamo that is Built To Spill and has spent time backing up folks like Mark Lanegan and former [...]

  • J Mascis and Built to Spill dudes make elect ..
While it was pretty dope when Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson re-imagined some of their popular BTS songs as electronic 80s jams (under the moniker The Electronic Anthology Project), things are going to get a lot more Mascis-y (Mascisian?). For Record Store Day (April 21), Martsch, Nelson, and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis will appear on a limited-to-500 purple vinyl with Mascis providing vocals to some of ye olde beloved Dino Jr. songs. Those of you who always wished to hear Mascis doin’ his damn thang over Prince-inspired beats, well… this isn’t quite that, but ...

  • Built to Spill, J Mascis Record Electronic D ..
On Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson’s inaugural release as the Electronic Anthology Project , the Built to Spill duo took on music by their own band, re-recording popular BTS tunes in an ’80s electro-pop style. The result was both an oddly appealing experiment and entertaining way to deconstruct the guitar-driven work for which they’re better known. Now EAP is back with perhaps the best indie-rock guitarist ever in tow: J Mascis and Nelson have teamed up to electrify the Dinosaur Jr. catalog with Mascis providing lead vocals on a new set due out April 21 for Record Store Day ...
