  • Let's Get Lost Festival - Live At The Silk M ..
Cleverly concealed behind red brick, on the banks of the River Derwent, is Derby’s Silk Mill. This venue is rich in heritage. It was once the first mill of its kind in Britain, but today sees it in a rather different incarnation. This urban space containing old industrial machinery and Rolls Royce aeroplane propellers has been transformed. Hidden away from passing trade, it houses the aptly named Let’s Get Lost festival by Holy Smokes. First to grace our ears on arrival are Crushing Blows: an indie noise-pop duo with catchy guitar hooks and danceable melodies to boot. Think ...

  • The Men, Iceage, Amen Dunes, and Simon Reyno ..
In the Netherlands this fall, a magical dream festival awaits. Fans of indie goth or post-punk and other sad people will want to book a flight to lovely Tilburg, where from September 10-16 one can enter the wardrobe known as Incubate Festival and wander out through the other side into a wonderful post-punk Narnia. But instead of scary witches and lions and stuff, they got The Men! Iceage! Amen Dunes! And the rad English dude who wrote a ton of articles on hip-hop, rave culture, and rock ‘n’ roll, as well as Bible of Awesomeness Rip It Up and Start ...

  • AU - 'Both Lights' (Leaf) [Review]
For their third album the Portland based duo, AU, have created a vast, diverse and sometimes difficult album that floats through styles and alters its pace without warning. The thread that loosely winds through the albums restless spirit is a skyward looking aspiration to evoke the esoteric and the magical - sounds from somewhere else. ‘Epic’ launches the album with tightly knotted arpeggios that have both the chaos and the control of a Lightning Bolt riff assault. Under this a keyboard brings pads of soft, melancholic chords that eventually over-power the noise, contrasting stylistically whilst sending the track soaring. ‘Get Alive ...

  • Live: Comicbook Writer. Daniel Johnston, Uni ..
The sky a becoming azure shade and the intense foliage of Islington inundating the place, it's irrevocably springtime and to adulterate the ageless prose of DuBose Heyward, 'the livin' is easy'. It is too ameliorated further by a rare visit from manic-depressive, maniacally genius Texan Daniel Johnston , whose Waller roots tonight wriggle into the essence of artefact aficionados British Sea Power . Branded the Texan Sea Power for one night only (and later perhaps unintentionally erroneously by Johnston as the "Texan Sea Lions"), they open up the evening with an acoustic set that sees the boys and girl from beside ...
