Bongwater

Bongwater was a college rock band formed in 1985 and dissolved in 1992 . The group was founded by Ann Magnuson and Mark Kramer (who was also the founder of the Shimmy Disc record label). The group also featured drummer Dave Licht and guitarists Dave Rick and Randolph A. Hudson III. G... Read More

Download Zip File 1. The Fall - Victrola Time ( Cherry Red ) Is there any better way to kick anything than with a new record by The Fall. This is the a-side of a seven inch single, limited to just 1000 copies released on Record Store Day a week or so ago. Initially the mighty M.E. Smith shrieks at a pitch similar to the sound you might imagine he would make if some brave soul tried to nick his pint. The b-side is a live version of that family favorite "Taking Off" from last years impressive "Ersatz G.B." although I ...

  • Songs of the day: Revolver covers!
My friend Bailey came up with a fine alternative version of Rubber Soul , featuring cover versions. As I felt one great Beatles album deserves another, here is my alt-take on the Fab Four's next album, Revolver. Anyone game to try Sgt. Pepper? "Taxman" by the Jam I'm cheating here. While this isn't technically a version of "Taxman," it is an incredible homage (or rip off depending on your point of view). "Eleanor Rigby" by Ray Charles A brilliant cover from The Genius "I'm Only Sleeping" by Wilco In this live version, Wilco converts this gently psychedelic ...

“Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel.” – Hunter S. Thompson No, this photo is not from last week’s show at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records. It was all ages after all and Nobunny kept his clothes on. [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: Florida has some general weirdness. Kramer from Bongwater moved there some time back, there’s a decent agency and an art school in Miami. It’s got modern scenic architecture and a psychedelic band called Lil Daggers. One of my … Continue reading →

Shimmy Disc Records is a label that seems to have prided itself on releasing strange, brilliant work that would appeal to the smallest possible slice of the listening population. Some of their better known acts include Bongwater, Gwar, Daniel Johnston, and Jad Fair. I suppose the Reverend Fred Lane would count among their lesser known Read more...

  • Review: Tumbleweed - The Waterfront Years, 1 ..
Divorced from its grunge-rock context, Aztec’s two-disc Tumbleweed retrospective sounds remarkably fresh, writes RENÉ SCHAEFER . Aztec Music’s tagline is, “Preserving Australia’s rich musical heritage.” For those of us who still vividly remember the grunge era, it’s funny to think of the early 1990s as part of such a legacy. It seems like it was just yesterday that flannel shirts, dirty jeans and overdriven riff rock ruled our stages and airwaves. But then you suddenly realise that Mudhoney first toured here 21 years ago and that Tumbleweed were the contemporaries of Nirvana, not their disciples. Born in ...

So what you think of the list so far, dear readers? A bit of a bumpy start, but I think it's coming along nicely. We've now made it to The Mushroom River Band, a hard rock/stoner/whatever band which featured the powerhouse vocals of Christian "Spice" Sjöstrand, also of Kayser and Spice & The RJ Band, and previously of Spiritual Beggars whom he left to devote his time to The Mushroom River Band full time. Didn't quite work out that way, as the band split up after his their second album. A damn shame as in my ...

  • Bongwater//Obscene & Pornographic Art
So I'm feeling a little loopy today from lack of sleep. Seems like the perfect time to listen to some crazy-ass music. Yesterday I mentioned Ann Magnuson, a member of Pulsallama . Later on in her musical career, Magnuson and Mark Kramer, who owned and ran Shimmy Disc Records , founded Bongwater . I wanted to play you guys the title track off The Power of Pussy , but Richard Metzger over at Dangerous Minds has an amazing story about making the video , which is definitely worth reading. Instead, I'm going to go with another track off that album, Obscene & Pornographic Art ...

Let's talk about the French for a minute. Aren't they adorable? Oo, la, la! They've got the look and the sound to pull off just about anything. I dated a French guy with a penchant for day-glo serape and leggings combos and I still found him sexy. Have you heard Carla Bruni's album? It sucks. And yet, she's sexy too! Pulsallama was an amazing all-girl percussion explosion that detonated in the East Village from 1980 - 1982, sadly without ever releasing a debut LP. Members included Ann Magnuson of Bongwater(!), Wendy Wild of the Mad Violets ...

  • Behold, A Forgotten Musical Slice Of Early ’ ..
To very loosely paraphrase Michael Keaton, I’ve tried to avoid this recently unearthed and enormously titillating video clip for Bongwater’s “The Power of Pussy”, but I can’t. It’s on every stupid blog and aggregator this week, and it’s just so…titillating (in an unmistakably early ’90s way, of course). Video probably NSFW. I’m not even gonna front [...] Behold, A Forgotten Musical Slice Of Early ’90s Sex is a post from Crawdaddy! - The Magazine of Rock .

Dangerous Minds : Bongwater: Power of Pussy from DANGEROUS MINDS on Vimeo . Behold the rarely seen music video for Bongwater’s feminist indie rock anthem, The Power of Pussy, from the album of the same title. When The Power of Pussy came out, in 1991, I became obsessed with doing a music video for this song. I was, and still am, a huge, huge Bongwater fan. Luckily, at the time, I was working at the studio where Ann Magnuson’s Cinemax special Vandemonium had been produced and one of the partners knew Ann and introduced me to her. Ann and I ...
