  • Malin Akerman To Play Blondie Singer Debbie ..
It seems Malin Akerman is impressing all the right people with her pipes. The actress will be showing the world her take on Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" in the upcoming "Rock Of Ages," and she's graduating from that '80s neon-colored musical to something a bit grimier, but no less musical. Akerman is set to take on music legend, style icon and all around badass Debbie Harry in "CBGB." Before Blondie blew up on the charts, they could be found haunting New York City's famed punk clubs Max's Kansas City and, yes, CBGB ...

  • Jazz breaking news: Lynne Arriale Trio featu ..
Pianist Lynne Arriale’s trio delivered a sparkling performance at Ronnie Scott’s club last night. From bassist Geoff Gascoyne ’s opening bass figure into their first number, Blondie’s ‘Call Me’, they established an immediate rapport with their audience who appreciated their faultless grooves, subtle reworkings of familiar songs and solos in which every note has a purpose. ‘Call Me’, with its bitter-sweet minor bluesy feel, showcased Gascoyne’s playing, which was simply stunning in the clarity of its ideas, its expressive quality and his great double bass sound. Arriale stretched out to great effect on her own ‘Crawfish ...

  • Night Surgeon: Night Surgeon
Night Surgeon , a duo from Portland, OR composed of Patrick Replogle and John Boyd are into melodic synth pop with a twist. Their new self-titled EP, produced and mixed by Gabriel Espinosa (Blondie, Fischerspooner, Mobile), is built around early Eighties New Wave pop interacting with a pulsating back beat. Both Berklee graduates, they have found a middle ground between complexity and accessibility. Progressive pop that could cross over to the mainstream. Touches of Depeche Mode ( Let Love In , Changes ) and The Pet Shop Boys ( Magnets ). Night Surgeon is released via Too Dark Records . Buy it from the band's website ...

  • Live Review: The Brian Jonestown Massacre + ..
Anton Newcombe is on a mission. The enigmatic frontman from The Brian Jonestown Massacre wants to “Rip the lungs outta of pop culture and smoke ‘em”. At Sydney’s Metro show – the first on this tour – he did all this and then some. But then, this came after he’d passed the dutchie to the sole support of the evening, another fellow cult band. The Raveonettes are Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo . They play garage rock and punk music. At different times this can sound like anything from The Vaccines to The Breeders, The White Stripes to Dum Dum ...

Brisbane Jazz Club – Sat May 5 Performing in a red light-bathed room, like one of the less lavish clubs in Scorsese’s New York New York, local jazz singer Sarah Collyer holds court with her excellent band. Unlike many performers of smooth vocal jazz, Collyer frequently deviates from standards with her own heart-on-sleeve originals and interpretations from non-jazz sources such as Paul Kelly, Leonard Cohen and even Blondie. Debbie Harry and co’s Call Me is converted from propulsive Morod ...

  • Review: Catcall - The Warmest Place
Catcall’s ‘The Warmest Place’ is a timely reminder of why we loved pop music so much in the first place, writes CAITLIN WELSH . As a female fan of pop music or a pop music fan who is also a fan of women, it’s been a largely heartening century so far. For every gross character like Brian McFadden or Chris Brown, there are the Robyns, Washingtons, Santigolds, Beyonces, Florences and, yes, Adeles, who perform variously with strength, subtlety, subversiveness, self-assurance and shit-kicking glee. But if you apply a sort of Bechdel test to pop music, it doesn’t fare ...
