  • Sonic Masala's Best 40 Albums of 2011...One ..
December of every year is the month of lists, where you get to see what people thought about the music of the past twelve months and either rant at said person's shit taste, laud your similarities, facepalm over forgotten gems, or scramble for something hitherto unheard of. But a list in January for the year before is more redundant than use by dates on a nymphomaniac's condom (sorry). Still, at first I thought that 2011 was a little low on the good music front, but after a sift there was some pretty killer moments. I'm sure things ...

  • Dan Mangan - Oh Fortune
This is the third album by acclaimed Canadian songwriter Dan Mangan , and the follow-up to his Polaris prize nominated Nice, Nice, Very Nice . Although Mangan often gets saddled with the 'folk' label, his arrangements are bigger and very ambitious than that might suggest, and for every wistful reflective acoustic moment there is a string part or brass section to reach out and grab your attention. Over the course of these 11 songs it becomes clear how Mangan's songcraft is honed by both his regular band and the production skills of Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Cave Singers, Sleepy Sun). The ...

  • Festival Frolics: Friday, Le Guess Who? 2011 ..
In a deserted, sterile bar, Invada starlet Anika stands propped up against posters of Tivoli shows past. One of these advertises Nico on November 5th of some nondescript year, and with said imagery imprinted on memory, the obligatory comparison can be concluded, considered done and dusted. Her awkwardness is amplified by the omnipresence of HD cameras that peer at her svelte figure from every angle, by the intimacy of this attic-like setting, by the headlamp glare of dazzling lights and mirror balls. Clattering through Yang Yang, I Go To Sleep, and Sadness Licks The Sun, these dub-reliant covers sound not ...

  • LIGHTS – Siberia
(Shock) Canadian electro-pop starlet aims even higher with second album0 Canada has traditionally been blessed with singular female vocalists – Metric’s Emily Haines, Stars/Broken Social Scene’s Amy Millan, Young Galaxy’s Catherine McCandless and Black Mountain’s Amber Webber to name but a few. An ambitious solo entity, Toronto’s Lights Poxleitner certainly has a lot going for her: a knack for a decent tune; striking looks; 2008’s Juno Award for her self-titled debut EP and gold album award fo ...

The computer on which I store all of my shit died yesterday and has been handed to a crack team of experts for reanimation. Until they've frankensteined it and handed it back to me there will be no updates around here. This post had luckily already been prepared two days ago and I'm being a naughty boy by posting this from work. Just so you know the kind of danger I'm putting myself in right now to provide you people with quality music for the weekend. Livin' on the edge, baby. Oh yeah. So make sure to ...

  • Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba tour North Ame ..
The ngoni is a traditional West African lute widely believed to be an ancestor of the banjo, and Bassekou Kouyate can seriously rock it. Typically, ngoni players sit down while they play, but in 1985, Bassekou Kouyate equipped his instrument with a strap so he could perform more like a guitarist. He says: "The ngoni is a great instrument. You can play any sort of music with it. We don't have to stay in the back. That's impossible." The Malian virtuoso leads Ngoni Ba, a group that has four (!) ngonis. They've released two albums — Segu Blue back ...

  • SATURDAY SONGS TO ROLLER COAST UP AND DOWN T ..
I done been a fan of Vancouver, Canada’s Black Mountain for quite some time now. The band’s shuffle-y stoner rock stylings fuse the best elements of ethereal 70s classic prog rock with melodic Zeppelin fare and heavy Sabbath-esque riffage, and the blend makes for one hell of an exploratory journey of psychedelic balls-deep rawk. Take [...]
