THE CRIBS – In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull ..(Liberator) Factoid: Lead singer dated Kate Nash The Cribs seem to occupy a strange place within contemporary British rock. Known for their prevailing interest in idiosyncratic groups such as Beat Happening and Comet Gain, they’re cult heroes in their homeland and seen as somewhat separate to the more mainstream British rock acts that we’re used to seeing wash up on the shores of the antipodes. Black Surf, Sludge GumBlack Gum are back! Those crazy guys from Austin Texas that brought is the grimy grunge garage of their self-titled cassette last year (see what I thought of it here ) have a two-track 7" out called 'Surf/Sludge', and although the production is 100% cleaner, it provides further proof that the trio write great catchy tunes. You wanna know what else is awesome? They have done a whole set of Beat Happening covers in the near past. So yeah - they are awesome. Check it out here (it's out on Monofonus Press). Mixtape # 40 / May 2012 / Slightly Slutty Mi ..Subtle flith in this mix, plenty of pure guitar driven rock'n'roll with a garage stench and honest energy. Right off the bat Montreal's own Each Other gives us a insight into what this young band could achieve. Raw, catchy and cool. Then there is Black Gum , hailing from the ever so eventful Austin, Texas. Another promising act that delivers a killer track with "Sludge", that reminded me strongly of Beat Happening that I simply had to throw in one of my Calvin's favorites. She Said Destroy!Anche quest'anno l' Handmade si conferma uno dei festival più belli in Italia, e il cast è come sempre stellare. Ma se, da una parte, non vedo l'ora di ritrovare dal vivo Gazebo Penguins, Karibean o Mojomatics, gente che sopra un palco non delude mai, dall'altra c'è un nome in mezzo alla scaletta, forse ancora poco conosciuto ma che già mi ha fatto sobbalzare il cuore, e che aspetto curioso di vedere live. Woolen KitsMore excellent, scrappy pop from the down under enclave of R.I.P. Society (Circle Pit, Royal Headache, Naked on the Vague). Woolen Kits fit somewhere between the shores of their close proximity Kiwi neighbors and the stripped-down clamor of Beat Happening. The record weaves and wobbles through treads left by both and of the two singers going here one's got dead on Calvin Johnson croak. Still it seems like any fans of the current Aussie indie pop explosion a la The Twerps, Blank Realm or one of the few mentioned above should be down with the shaggy shake ...raven sings the blues15 March 2012

Life Partners Are For The DogsI haven't been able to get this album out of my head this past week. Ryan over at Sophomore Lounge Records flicked me this ages ago, and it somehow fell through the cracks (my two month break is still proving to be a pain in the arse...)
