  • Music Review: Black Tambourine - OneTwoThree ..
Black Tambourine OneTwoThreeFour [EP] [Slumberland; 2012] by Alex R Wilson Rating: These days, everybody seems to be getting back together. Whether it’s something in the air, this current generation’s infatuation with yesteryear (late 80s/early 90s reboot, now with less Skidz ), current project purgatory, reconciliation of feuding members, or boredom, there is little to indicate exactly why everyone is giving their old projects a second (or third) go. Maybe it’s for money; maybe it’s a way to reinsert their place in history — the case varies from band to band. None of these reasons really fit the ...

This week's round up of the tracks I haven't had the space to post... Jaill From: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States In a perfect example of synchronicity Milwaukee indie trio Jaill's laid back, crackly power pop Perfect Ten is a perfect 10 out of 10! Go Try   Jaill - Perfect Ten by subpop Kyla La Grange From: London, United Kingdom Haunting, beautiful pop.  Go Try   Kyla La Grange - 'Vampire Smile' (Seasfire Remix) by Stayloose Fergus & Geronimo From: Brooklyn, New York The Strange One Speaketh/Roman Tick from weird New Yorkers Fergus & Geronimo is straight up new wave that would ...

  • THE CRIBS – In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull ..
(Liberator) Factoid: Lead singer dated Kate Nash The Cribs seem to occupy a strange place within contemporary British rock. Known for their prevailing interest in idiosyncratic groups such as Beat Happening and Comet Gain, they’re cult heroes in their homeland and seen as somewhat separate to the more mainstream British rock acts that we’re used to seeing wash up on the shores of the antipodes. Perhaps their incorruptible integrity may have been the reason that ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr ...

  • Black Surf, Sludge Gum
Black Gum are back! Those crazy guys from Austin Texas that brought is the grimy grunge garage of their self-titled cassette last year (see what I thought of it here ) have a two-track 7" out called 'Surf/Sludge', and although the production is 100% cleaner, it provides further proof that the trio write great catchy tunes. You wanna know what else is awesome? They have done a whole set of Beat Happening covers in the near past. So yeah - they are awesome. Check it out here (it's out on Monofonus Press). • Mixtape # 40 / May 2012 / Slightly Slutty Mi ..
Subtle flith in this mix, plenty of pure guitar driven rock'n'roll with a garage stench and honest energy. Right off the bat Montreal's own Each Other gives us a insight into what this young band could achieve. Raw, catchy and cool. Then there is Black Gum , hailing from the ever so eventful Austin, Texas. Another promising act that delivers a killer track with "Sludge", that reminded me strongly of Beat Happening that I simply had to throw in one of my Calvin's favorites. The People's Temple is a psychedelic band from Michigan, been operating for ...

  • She Said Destroy!
, ovvero ...

  • Pod Fodder (Volume One Hundred And Sixty) ..
Download Zip File 1. Inspiral Carpets - Your So Good For Me (Cow) This has been around for a few months but in time honored fashion I've only just found out about it. It's (or was) a new single from Inspiral Carpets, Their first in about sixteen years I'm told. This could of course have been a disaster in line with many other reformed bands recently. Perhaps because of the departure or non reappearance of singer Tom Hingley and his replacement with the guy who was the Carpets original voice man Stephen Holt the sound seems pretty fresh ...

  • #387 Sea Lions – I Don’t Wanna Go Out
Sea Lions frontman Adrian Pillado may sing about how he wishes he was Lou Reed but his band’s brand of garage indie pop is essentially more Jonathan Richman or Beat Happening — frisky, shambolic songs themed around social neuroses that … Continue reading →

  • Woolen Kits
More excellent, scrappy pop from the down under enclave of R.I.P. Society (Circle Pit, Royal Headache, Naked on the Vague). Woolen Kits fit somewhere between the shores of their close proximity Kiwi neighbors and the stripped-down clamor of Beat Happening. The record weaves and wobbles through treads left by both and of the two singers going here one's got dead on Calvin Johnson croak. Still it seems like any fans of the current Aussie indie pop explosion a la The Twerps, Blank Realm or one of the few mentioned above should be down with the shaggy shake ...

  • Life Partners Are For The Dogs
I haven't been able to get this album out of my head this past week. Ryan over at Sophomore Lounge Records flicked me this ages ago, and it somehow fell through the cracks (my two month break is still proving to be a pain in the arse...) Their first release for 2012, Dogs is a cassette which shows Aaron Osbourne (formerly of State Champion and Plows, among others) as Life Partner . This new batch of bummed-out, midwestern grunge folk is something else - its launch out of the bedroom and into the alleyways and shadowed doorways is a welcome if ...

  • "Twee no longer form of resistance"

The last couple years have seen San Francisco nightlife reborn. • V/A - Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes Fr ..
Hey, my name is David Abraham Jeremiah Snusgrop and I flog horses wherever I go. Last week I made this post about Michael Azerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life . Go read it, I'm not going over it again. After making that post I had to go back and re-read the book, and sure enough I couldn't stop myself from making yet another compilation, one specifically based on the book. I literally couldn't stop myself. Am I autistic? Two tracks from each band featured in the book, in the order in which the appear in said ...

Our irregular round-up of some new-ish cassette, CD-R and vinyl releases including Cured Pink, Bleeding Knees Club side project Wax Witches and releases from Negative Guest List, the label/zine run by the late Brendon Annesley . Words by TIM SCOTT . Mole House Hey Come My Way (7”, Quemada) This debut featuring Michael, Pat and Carla of Mad Nanna and White Woods starts with a broken down pop song that's similar in feel to early Eric's Trip at their creaky wire screened kitchen door best. Carla's lead vocal has a sombre and introspective tone feel and the music ...
