  • Can't Hear Nallo For The Trees
Minneapolis band Nallo brought out a nice lil EP called Submarine last year that I brought to your attention here . Well the trio have an album Called Mechano And The Trees in the works, and have decided to slowly leak it track by track until the whole thing is running rampant all over the interverse. ARGH! The first two tracks are below. Suffice to say that they more than deliver on Submarine 's promise - I'd even go so far as to say it's a giant leap for Nallo-kind. Both tracks are free over here - keep checking their website ...

  • Fox Searchlight Hands John Hawkes Led Sundan ..
Park City has been birth place of several award-season runs in recent years with "Precious" in 2009, "Winter's Bone" in 2010 and "Martha Marcy May Marlene" last year all coming into the Oscar conversaton a year after their premieres. This year, the water was a little murkier with no definitive picture leaping out of the pack though, along Benh Zeitlin's "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" and Ben Lewin's drama "The Surrogate" starring Sundance favorite John Hawkes seem to be the most likely candidates.  Fox Searchlight, who acquired the latter film soon after its premiere, evidently concur: it ...

why don’t you try to sleep alone ♫ Acollective – Girls I just realized that after my post-Israel obsess-fest over “Stolen Goods” (below) I never gave a proper album review of Acollective’s Onwards LP. Well, this won’t be it. Consider it more of a friendly reminder to pour yourself a stiff drink and dive into the rollicking gypsy folk rock of these live-show beasts. ♫ Acollective – Stolen Goods… continue reading

  • Cannes – 3e jour : Dolan et Zeitlin, deux ce ..
Vendredi 18 mai 2012, deux films attendus de la sélection Un Certain Regard étaient projetés. Pourquoi attendus ?

  • Vinnie Vincent Invasion - S/T
Bought this cassette in March 1986, after reading a rave review in... Hit Parader or RIP, I can't remember... anyhoo, for those that don't know, Vinnie Vincent was kicked out of, or quit, Kiss and went on to form this band (which would feature Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum on the next album, who would both go on to form glam metal legend Slaughter). Now, for those of you offended by the inclusion of a rather perfectly-archetypal glam metal band-- I hate glam metal. Making fun of glam metal (and those who liked it) was my major in ...

  • Positivus Festival Returns
Latvia isn’t the first place that springs to mind when talking about music. Often overlooked, this region deserves a second glance. Positivus – the largest music and arts festival in the Baltic States – places together some brilliant internationally renowned acts with exciting talent from the provinces. This year you can see Manic Street Preachers, The Vaccines, Wild Beasts, and The Sound Poets all for a meagre 57 Euros (£45), camping included. Beginning in 2007 with 4,000 attendees, the two day event has grown exponentially, now housing a 20,000 strong crowd each day. It’s no wonder the festival ...

  • Benga - Live At Horatio's, Brighton
It was with a degree of hesitation that we entered Horatio’s in Brighton at 7pm, the evening before The Great Escape officially started. On the line-up of Vevo’s first foray into the world of festivals were Benga, Chiddy Bang and Sub Focus. A rather odd trio at first glance, but enough to make us head down to the end of the pier and have a look-see. The venue itself is pretty neat, though not typical for the dubstep heavy-hitters featured on the roster. Imagine a Harvester if it were to be popped on the end a pier and ...

  • Music Review: Extra Life - Dream Seeds
Extra Life Dream Seeds [Northern Spy; 2012] by Jeff Roesgen Rating: Each of Extra Life’s three albums have come across as closely-guarded confessions. Not the kind a killer or an adulterer makes in exchange for a clear conscience, but those of the shamed victim, the one cursed to wonder whether they’d done something to provoke the mistreatment they’ve received. Secular Works , the band’s debut, explored such notions as they present to the outside world. It discussed with clear omniscience pathological and social maladies like bleeding and blackmail, allowing the listener to observe the pain and shame ...

  • News: Another List To Whinge About: Top 50 A ..
Where is The Dirty Skanks’ Nathan Cavaleri? That’s surely the question on everyone’s lips following Australian Guitar Magazine’s list of the Top 50 Aussie Guitarists. Topped by AC/DC’s Angus Young, the list includes many worthy (ie. M+N -approved) contenders such as Deniz Tek, Lobby Loyde, Adalita, Tim Rogers, Marty Willson-Piper, Mick Harvey, Spencer P Jones, Gareth Liddiard (pictured left, giving Dan Kelly an impromptu guitar lesson), Brad Shepherd, Kim Salmon, Ash Naylor, Tom Lyngcoln, Oren Ambarchi and, of course, the late Rowland S Howard, who recently had a custom pedal made in his honour ...

  • Live At Leeds 2012 // The 405 Review
On Saturday May 5th, The 405 headed down (well...up) to Leeds to cover Live At Leeds festival, which is a multi-venue city festival full of relatively new bands such as Novella, all the way through to big hitters such as Los Campesinos! (or Example if you fancied buying a separate ticket...which we didn't). With other festivals such as Camden Crawl, Sounds From The Other City, Simple Things and Land of Kings (all of which were city festivals) all taking place on the same weekend, how did LAL hold up? Read on to read about some of the ...

  • Interview | Strong, confident woman – Laura ..
We first became enamoured by Laura Gibson with debut album If You Come To Greet Me, and again with 2009 follow-up, Beasts of Seasons. Elegiac and gentle, both showcased a remarkable voice that seemed to echo from a 1930’s gramophone. For all their perfectly-pitched nostalgia and accomplished song-writing, there was an air of tentativeness running through both records – a feeling that Gibson was holding back. Then came La Grande, a full-horse gallop through the old American south. At times cleverly ironic, at others whimsical, at still others a strange but beguiling combination of styles, La Grande was the sound ...
