Bear Hands . Tablasaurus. I admit I keep forgetting to listen to this band. Thank you Last.fm for making me, as it just came on my library station. Apparently I “loved” it when I heard it the first time, and now you can too ( for the first or the 50th time, I trust it is just as good ). Xo Mj

  • The CMW Diaries: Day Three ft. Bear Hands + ..
Day three of Canadian Music Week got off to a reasonably slow start as we enjoyed one of the few sleep-ins of our trip, ahead of our usual slog of interviews and meetings. As we ran from one place to the next, however, I did manage to catch a couple of bands... albeit briefly. First up were Ontario's own Sandman Viper Command (pictured below) at the CBC music social lounge, a four piece performing their garage pop via a short and sweet acoustic set... made all the more lo-fi by having the drummer propping a single drum on a ...

  • PropertyOfZack Road Blog : : A Great Big Pil ..
From Tyler Soucy: SXSW is always a lot of fun, but this year was a million times better than last year. The Topshelf Records show, our Making Moves showcase with Motion City Soundtrack, and the Giant Steps Productions show with Look Mexico were all amazing. The only bad part was the really terrible choice I made to jump into an empty pool during a photo shoot; 5 foot drop with my year old vans turned into a really bad bruised heel. Then combine that with all the walking one needs to do during SXSW and 8 shows in 4 days ...

  • Canadian Musicfest Picks (2012)
It's that time of year again when music festival season kicks off in Toronto with Canadian Music Week and it's music series Canadian Musicfest starting tonight. Time and time again, CMF has failed to live up to the excitement and anticipation of Toronto's other city-wide music festival North By Northeast which happens in June and seems to get better with each passing year. And if CMF hasn't been on par with NXNE, it's not to say it has nothing to offer. I'm sure with a little research and a little luck, one's bound ...

  • Kinks by RUBBING ALCOHOL [2012]
Kinks by RUBBING ALCOHOL [ bandcamp ] Caught this song courtesy of MOKB  Blog Radio on XMU right before my free year subscription expired (argh!).  A side project of Val Loper of Bear Hands , Rubbing Alcohol has a free 2 song EP on their bandcamp page produced by Ayad Al Adhamy of Passion Pit .  The bands first shows ever are coming up in a couple of weeks in the NYC.  Oddly enough, something about the vocals in this song remind me of The Romantics from the 80s.

Sometimes I get spoiled by living in Los Angeles. Whether it’s walking down the street and bumping into a celebrity or knowing about a “hot” band before they make it seems completely normal. Sure the latter part of that statement will probably ostracize me from some of my readers, but it’s true. Although it seems pretentious and snobbish, it feels weird constantly saying, “I have been listening to this band for X amount of years before anyone knew who they were.” After a while you become accustomed to this feeling and jaded since a lot of breakthrough bands ...
