Bastardgeist - ShiftIf you're prepared to sit through thirty introductory sections of African percussion something oddly hypnotic happens in this latest Brainlove-spawned single, half of a double A out on Monday, from Chicago's Joel Midden. Although the synth sounds are dialled further back there's something of last year's Twin Shadow about it as hypnagogic glissandos dance and wash around the falsetto. It's not a song that stays in one place for too long, though, as drones fade in and out and splashes of percussion raise the roof against something that sounds entirely composed even as it switches ...Sweeping The Nation17 November 2011

This latest addition to the Brainlove travelling carney show is Joel Midden of Chicago, whose work throws together samples, odd polyrhythmic percussion, processed vocals and, as his primary weapon of choice, kalimba. On this cut from an album released here on the 30th the African thumb piano is pressed into tinkly, starry, musical box-type loops as above it things go not unlike TV On The Radio in the barber shop harmonies at multiple octaves over undulating carefully outlain atmospheric obliqueness. Brainlove Festival // First Bands Announced ..Run by London independent label Brainlove Records, 2011's Brainlove Festival takes place at Brixton Windmill on May 28. More than 20 bands and DJs are due to play both indoor and outdoor stages at the all day event, and the first few have just been announced. Confirmed so far are: Napoleon IIIrd , Bear Driver , Mat Riviere , Patterns , Meursault and Bastardgeist . Label founder and regular record spinner John has also been confirmed to DJ at the festival, as will Dreamtrack Diamond Sound. Advanced day tickets are a tenner and are available now.
