  • Video: Aaron Embry - “Your Heart And Mine” I ..
Video: Aaron Embry - “Your Heart And Mine” It looks like Aaron Embry has been floating just beneath my radar for years: producing Avi Buffalo’s debut , performing in the evolving lineup of Ed Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and  — in the most unforgivably overlooked collaboration — playing keyboard on Elliott Smith’s “Pretty (Ugly Before)” single. That song, as any fellow Smith obsessive might point out, was one of the last tracks he put the finishing touches on and approved for release in his life. Regardless, it’s a gorgeously heartbreaking tune and so, as it turns out, is Embry’s ...

  • Ears Wide Open: Aaron Embry
Aaron Embry’s solo material has often taken a back seat to his work with other artists — he’s been party to albums and tours for a host of A-listers, he produced Avi Buffalo’s debut album, and most recently he has played keyboards for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. And his 2008 album as Amnion [...]

  • Los Angeles Loves... A Night at The Satellit ..
Last Thursday, we were asked (or was it reminded?) to book a show for this Tuesday at The Satellite. Six days to book a whole night at a 250-capacity club sounded like booker suicide but we love a challenge (know what I'm saying, ladies?). The plan was to ask a bunch of our favorite bands that haven't played the club in awhile then call it a day. Three bands down, we lightly poked and prodded around to find a fourth with one poke leading to Ms. Ida Maria. If you follow Ms. Ida on Twitter (like you should ...

  • Feature: Ben Lee: ‘I’m More Vulnerable Now’ ..
Despite spending most of his adult life in the music business, Ben Lee tells DOUG WALLEN he’s never been so unsure of himself as an artist – and that’s the way he likes it. Having grown from a cute teen prodigy into a committed music lifer, Ben Lee knows plenty about evolving. And on his meditative eighth album Deeper into Dream , he’s never been more fixated on permanence and flux. Based around a longtime fascination with dreaming, the record follows several years of work with dream therapist Jan Lloyd, who died last year. It’s also influenced by ...

  • Pageants: Local Band We Love
Pageants is the new project featuring Rebecca Coleman from Avi Buffalo and Devin O’Brien. When I saw the band perform at the Bootleg Theatre a few months ago, it was a duo performing with a drum machine. The crowd was small, but the attendees were telling. Mostly writers and other music industry folks. One listen to the band reveals why. Gorgeous soaring vocals with a familiar garage-y sound lending some credibility to the current surge in female-fronted indie rock. The vocals are key for me because while a lot of the other ...

  • 405 Focus: Summer Camp // "Return to Condale ..
My relationship with Summer Camp started back in 2010 at The Great Escape festival. Prior to seeing them live I'd heard snippets of their tracks, and was undecided as to whether or not the hype was justified, but being the nice guy that I am, I went along to see them anyway, plus they were playing before Avi Buffalo, so it was a convenient choice for me. Long story short, I wasn't blown away. On the way back to London the following day I even tweeted about it on The 405 twitter account, never thinking anyone would care ...

  • New Music: Pageants – ‘Edible Rust’
Via It’s still unclear how much Rebecca Coleman’s departure will affect Avi Buffalo. After a near-perfect debut album, Avi’s been floating around East L.A., playing shows with rappers and uploading bizarro bedroom recordings to Soundcloud; not exactly the harbinger of a glorious LP2. Coleman, though, soldiers on: her new band, Pageants, plays the sort of [...]
