  • Auld Lang Syne
Dick Clark , host of TV shows such as American Bandstand and Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve, has died of a heart attack, aged 82. As host of American Bandstand from 1957 to 1987 Clark was an important factor in the spread of rock & roll. His show was one of the first with a desegregated audience and also one of the first where black and white performers shared a stage. Clark joined the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993.

  • Surprise!: April Fool
Brave Combo : April Fool [ purchase ] Imagine my awe and dismay when I was once asked to review an album by Brave Combo called Holidays! on the reputable Rounder Records label. Brave Combo surprised me well when I listened to the cut identified for April 1st. “I got you good. You had no clue. What a joke! I’m so cool. You got fooled. April Fool!” When formed in 1979 in Denton, Texas, Brave Combo called themselves a New Wave polka band. Three decades later, they've proven they’re much more with influences of country, jazz, rock ‘n' roll, surf ...

  • favourite songs of the year 2011
2011 was a quiet year here, but that's not because I didn't have any songs to love, or didn't listen to any new music, or because I don't love you. It's just that I've been busy working on all that other stuff that has nothing to do with love and songs, and also, all that other stuff that does. This is the sixth year I've done this list, and it's a little sparser. But the songs that made it here are worth your precious ear-time, every one of them. And if you ...

  • The Story Behind Phish’s Steam NYE Gag
For those wondering what went into the “gag” that Phish pulled off as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, there’s a great article you need to read from Live Design . Author Marian Sandberg spoke with both the man behind the stunt, Tony Award-winning scenic designer David Gallo, in Part One of his two-piece feature, and Phish LD Chris Kuroda in the forthcoming second installment in a revealing look at how it all went down. • Annalise Emerick - Starry Eyed (2011)
Annalise Emerick has had an emotional journey before the release of her debut EP, Starry Eyed .  The seven-song EP paints a beautiful picture of a young woman taking risks, moving forward, and making change.  Though the album may be considered pop, there is a huge folk and rock influence that drives the EP.  Originally Emerick had plans to launch her music career in Nashville. In “You Win” , Emerick tells listeners about her emotional departure from Tennessee and hopeful move to Boston to get a brand new start. Being about Nashville, the banjos add a nice touch. Emerick is originally from ...

  • Phish MSG Run 2011: From A to Z
Today, we’ll wrap up our exhaustive holiday run coverage with the tradition we started back during the southern run of summer 2010 - the A to Z analysis. In this segment, we evaluate all aspects of a tour by touching on all the bases from beginning to end with a bullet for every letter in the alphabet. The band certainly left a lot of room for debate with regard to the recent four dates at Madison Square Garden as they played uncharacteristically well to begin the run, but trailed off noticeably as the days led up to the New Year ...
