  • THE EARLY NOVEMBER Announce First Album in S ..
Six years have passed since New Jersey's The Early November released what, at the time, appeared to be their final album, the sprawling 'The Mother, The Mechanic & The Path'. Now back and rejuvenated with its original lineup, the band will be releasing its Rise Records debut titled 'In Currents' on Tuesday, July 10. Things have changed for the little underdog band from the farming town of Hammonton, NJ, over the past six years. They found themselves with new purpose, drive and knowledge and eventually teamed up with the Portland, OR-based Rise Records for 'In Currents'. The album was produced ...

  • Condre Scr Are Genius
I have been listening to this album for months and thought Id already posted about, but alas this has not been the case. I love me some ace post-rock, yet new good stuff can be hard to find. You Are Genius , German band Condre Scr's 2nd LP (and 1st in six years!), certainly isn't anything new - in fact for the majority of its playing time the album could be outtakes from the early days of Scottish gods Mogwai. But that is the kicker, right there - whilst still an amazing band, Mogwai killed in the early days. As does ...

  • The Great Escape 2012 // The 405 Review
The 405 team was out in force for The Great Escape this year, so rather than bringing you a band-by-band account of our time in Brighton, our editors/writers have chosen their five favourite bands from the event. Who came out on top? Read on to find out... Photos by Tim Boddy James Canham Swords">Forest Swords - Tim and myself arrived partway through Swords">Forest Swords set (they started at the same time AlunaGeorge finished) to a stunned and mostly silent crowd. The two of them on stage (one at the mic, laptop and electronics and another on the bass ...

  • Live Review: Prince - Allphones Arena, Sydne ..
Prince was once a symbol but these days he’s an icon. He’s responsible for so many hits- from other artists to solo works and whatever flamboyant guise he’s decided to wear that particular day. It’s hardly a surprise that his concert attracted all types and was a true celebration of music and love. There were the diehard fans who had been around long before ’99; the guys and girls in purple; lovely ladies in raspberry berets; the dotting punks that love pop and the children of the eighties – like myself – who grew up singing his songs ...

  • We Love The 90s - Live At Telenor Arena, Osl ..
If extra terrestrials landed in the UK they could be forgiven for believing that in the nineties people only took Screamadelica off the stereo to listen to Blur or Oasis. By contrast, touching down in Oslo’s Telenor Arena recently would have left a rather different impression of the decade’s music. Billed as We Love the ‘90s, the lineup included Haddaway, Culture Beat and “special guests” The Vengaboys, as well as quite a few more who whose charms failed to reach these shores. Among them was Captain Jack, a duo fronted by about a dozen different people and whose ...

  • NWOBHM WEDNESDAY: CHINAWITE
For today's NWOBHM WEDNESDAY article I've decided to go at it alone. While Metal Mark and I do (more often than not) team up on this genre (and all the great bands associated with it) this particular posting was rather last minute. So, it's just me and my usual ramblings. You've been warned. With that out of the way I'd also like to state this little fact up front for all. Yorkshire's Chinawite are not the best that the NWOBHM scene had to offer. In fact they just barely qualify as a NWOBHM band ...

  • The Cribs - In The Belly of the Brazen Bull ..
If you'll pardon the slightly pompous BA Journalism term, what's the current "narrative" of the Jarman brothers? For their first few albums The Cribs were characterised as eccentric punk rockers whose ace songwriting was hampered by lo-fi production which made their brilliant songs sound like they'd been recorded in/by a tin can (which was sort of true). Then when it came to album four, 2009's Ignore the Ignorant , all eyes were on - "Hey It's Johnny Marr! Out Of The Smiths!" (and Modest Mouse) "What's He Doing In The Cribs?" That album was also ...

  • The Ace of Cups “It’s Bad For You But Buy It ..
San Francisco’s the Ace Of Cups deserves mention in these pages because the band occupies a singular place in rock history. It wasn’t the first all-female self-contained rock outfit to achieve public recognition; elsewhere on this site you’ll find mention of the Liverbirds, one of several all-girl groups playing their own instruments who came out [...]

  • Hits From The Box #49 - Salt & Pepper Wells ..
Despite the fact that this blog pays SOOOOOOO well, it is important for me to give a little back to the local community (IE pay the bills). So over the summer months I coached a under 14s cricket squad. We were one of the most consistent teams in the competition - we lost every match, convincingly. And to celebrate, we had a break-up - at Sizzlers. Yep, I'm a high flyer. But I'm also stupid. Because wherever there are all you can eat sugar mountains - there are crazy-arse kids tripping off their balls. And I had to put up with ...
